The design for the new Art and Music High School in Aosta (Italy) is designed as a sculpted monomaterial volume that seeks to bring unity and coherence to a plot with incongruous architectural elements. The main entrance is located along the primary street (Via Torino) and is marked by a suspended volume that creates a canopy, welcoming students at the opening and closing of the school day.
Entering the building, a vast space opens up as an internal square: an agora where daily flows transform the ground floor into a vibrant and ever-active environment. This space becomes the school's primary social hub, and its intentional flexibility allows for multiple uses. The ground floor also includes the sports hall, accessible both from the central agora and from the exterior. Traditional classrooms are concentrated in the wing furthest from Via Torino and distinguished by an internal planted courtyard that floods the circulation areas with natural light and fosters visual interaction between different floors and sections of the building.
The project stands out for its terrace, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the future adjacent park. Additionally, a space for sports and open-air leisure is located on the rooftop of the gymnasium. The absence of fences enables unrestricted access to this space for anyone who wishes to use it, thus establishing the school as a true landmark for the local community. The school's openness to the city plays a crucial role in this architectural and educational vision, aiming to foster the blending of ages, knowledge, skills, ideas and experiences.
