The project for the redevelopment of Taksim Square in Istanbul (Turkey) is structured around three different layers:

  • the SOIL represents Taksim’s history, a synthesis of inextricable signs among which no selection is possible. All of them are essential and significant, and all could be reconsidered in the future. The floor pavement and the park layout are therefore left as they are. The soil is just fine as it is;

  • the CANOPY gives Taksim a new and strong architectural identity while opening up unexpected visual perspectives. It is a covered space that suggests a boundary and defines a place. The Loggia in Taksim will mark the transition from an uncertain and vague public space (today) to an inclusive one (tomorrow). Taksim Square will be a democratic place, a space of freedom and dialogue. The Loggia welcomes all variations of use throughout the days and seasons, embracing the fluid communities that inhabit and cross it. The suggested Loggia engages in dialogue with Istanbul’s history: its mosques and their courtyards, the public markets, the pavilions along the Bosphorus, and the interplay of light and shadow over the seasons. The Loggia is a piece of civic architecture, a generous and inclusive shelter capable of interpreting the new chapter that Istanbul is experiencing;

  • the TRACKS bring to life “multiplicity” and “unpredictability”: each Track is a “theory” composed of repeated elements following a clear principle—shadow, boulders, an elevated walkway, benches, light, and sound. Along each Track, these principles take on different forms without losing the energy they bring to the public space. If the Canopy is the immovable scenography, then the Tracks, like actors in disguise, enter and exit the scene;

  • the APP: during the construction phase and later, once the entire project is completed, a mobile application — open to citizens and tourists - will enable users to manage the public space, offering suggestions and information on what Taksim was in the past, what it represents today, and what it can become in the future. The App makes Taksim always available to everybody and from everywhere.
